- This time of year seems to signal a new attention to our home furnishings. Whether it is the change in temperature, the upcoming holidays or just coincidence, I’m not sure, but since many folks are looking at their draperies, slipcovers and carpets and thinking, “Should I clean or replace?” I thought I’d share some thoughts with you, from the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.
- The BBB publishes a booklet called, ‘Invisible Enemies of Your Draperies’ that contains many helpful hints and useful information.
- Here’s what they have to say:
- “Because of the many invisible factors that might affect both the life and appearance of draperies and curtains, the retail store cannot guarantee how long they will last nor can the drycleaner always determine what the result of the drycleaning process will be. You the consumer, however, will benefit by remembering the following hints.
- Know the fiber, weave and finish of a drapery or curtain you select.
- Examine the quality of the construction.
- If possible, rotate draperies from sunny windows to an unexposed side of the house; or vary window treatments to equalize the environmental effect.
- Inform your cleaner of the fiber content in your draperies.
- Remember the life expectancy of lined draperies is five years; unlined four years; sheer fabrics-three years. However, exposure to sunlight and certain atmospheric conditions in the home will substantially shorten their life.
- Send you draperies and curtains to a reliable drycleaner.”
- The atmospheric conditions the BBB is referring to are humidity, moisture, cooking fumes, second hand smoke, oxidation, etc. Regular cleaning will remove these pollutants and help keep your draperies looking better and lasting longer.
- It is a good rule of thumb to consider cleaning your draperies and window treatments every two to three years to ensure a longer life expectancy. Email us and one of our experts will come to your home for a free estimate of their condition and cost of cleaning. As your professional cleaner, this is just one of the many services we offer to keep your clothes and your home looking the best for years to come!
- We offer complimentary BOX STORAGE for your winter and summer garments. Many customers find this service invaluable. Here’s how it works. In the spring, gather all your winter garments or call me and I’ll pick them up and we will dry clean and hold your garments for you until the Fall. When you need your clothing again call us up and we will have them ready for you to pick them up or have me deliver them to you, cleaned, and freshly finished. We also provide the same service at the end of the summer. You only pay the price of the cleaning, the storage is complimentary. It is important to store your garments to extend the life and wear-ability of your clothing.
- Here’s why:
- To best protect garments and households from moths, it helps to know when they are first susceptible to this type of insect damage. Moth damage occurs mainly during storage or when the articles are not moved or worn on a regular basis. Clothes moths, which are small buff-colored moths, choose dark, quiet, undisturbed places to lay eggs. It’s the moth larvae that feed on the fabric, not the adult moths. Knowing that these items are susceptible to moth damage during storage or inactivity, here are several easy steps that will generally prevent damage:
- Brush the wool clothes in your active wardrobe on a regular basis – a lint brush or bristled clothes brush works well for this.
- Clean wool articles before placing in storage. Soiled wools (even those which have picked up invisible body oils) are more likely to attract moths. Dry cleaning will remove any moth eggs or larvae.
- After cleaning, store wools in an airtight bag or container.
- Can moth holes be repaired?
- Moth holes can sometimes be repaired by reweaving, but before starting the repair process, it would be a good idea to first have the article dry cleaned. Dry cleaning will kill and remove any unseen insect larvae and should flush out any loose fibers revealing the full extent of the insect damage. Reweaving involves weaving yarns by hand into the damaged areas to replace the missing yarns. Yarns used for reweaving are taken from an inconspicuous part of the garment or from an outside source. It’s a tedious process and can be expensive. Reweaving is also something of a lost art, but if you want to know more about this service, please ask us.
Suede & Leather Cleaning Back to Top
- Another one of our cleaning services is leather and Suede Cleaning. We have expert technicians to handle this delicate process for you. At Sir Francis, we recommend cleaning your leather and Suede garments at least once a year and more often if they become soiled. Regular cleaning of these higher priced garments will restore and ensure many seasons of wear. We also can tailor and make alterations to leather and suede garments such as: repairing rips and tears, replacing and fixing zippers, and shortening sleeves and hems to name a few. It is important to clean these items at least yearly and store them in a cool dry place.

- Here are a few tips on caring for your leather garments:
- Always hang leather garments on wide or padded hangers to maintain their shape.
- Never store leather goods in plastic or other non-breathable covers. This will cause leather to become dry.
- Allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally away from any heat source.
- In winter, promptly remove salt deposits from garments by having the garment professionally cleaned.
- Avoid storing in very humid and dry environments as well as direct sunlight.
- Do not use waxes, silicone products or other leather preparations that impair a garment’s ability to breathe.
- Avoid spraying perfumes or hair sprays while wearing your garment and do not apply pins, adhesive badges or tape. Wearing a scarf at the neckline will help keep hair and body oil away from the collar.
- Hems may be fixed with a tiny amount of rubber cement by a leather care professional.
- All products used at home should be tested on an inconspicuous part of the garment.
